LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Come to The Green Free Library during the month of February to view the new exhibit. Wanda Short of Wellsboro has been kind enough to share her collection of Victorian valentines and paper ephemera with us. Also on display is a beautiful Victorian ribbon lady picture that was created by Wanda's mother, Louise Schaffer, in the late 1930's.

While you're viewing these adorable old cards, take a minute to learn about Valentine's Day, and the many stories surrounding its creation. Then when you're finished, check out one of our books on how to make greeting cards, or stop on the way home and buy a special greeting for your own sweetheart.

NEW TITLES, NEW FORMAT

The Green Free Library has added 4 audio books to its collection that are in a new format. These recorded books are in the MP3 format, and require an MP3 player to listen to them. This is not the small device that you download music and books onto, but the type that most new cars are equipped with.

These MP3-CDs are being provided by Recorded Books (free of charge) in addition to our normal shipment of books on CD that we receive every month. They will circulate just like the other books and audio-material, for 3 weeks with an additional one time renewal of 3 weeks, as long as the titles are not on hold for another patron. They are currently being shelves on the new book shelf, and CAN NOT be returned in the bookdrop.

At this time the titles available on MP3-CD include:

Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton

Churchill by Paul Johnson

The Unbearable Lightness of Scones by Alexander McCall Smith

A Touch of Dead (Sookie Stackhouse: The Complete Stories) by Charlaine Harris

Stop in soon and check one out. Give it a try and please, tell us if you like it or not!

DVDS FOR THE FAMILY

The Green Free Library has added two popular DVD titles for the family to its collection.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Heyday Films production. This film was produced by David Heyman and David Barron and directed by David Yates. The screenplay was written by Steve Kloves , based on the 6th installment in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. This movie was released in theaters on July 15, 2009 and on DVD on Dec 08, 2009.

Running time is 153 minutes and this DVD has an MPAA rating of PG for scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality. Parents click here for additional information.

Summary from the WebPAC: Emboldened by the return of Lord Voldemort, the Death Eaters are wreaking havoc in both the Muggle and wizarding worlds. Hogwarts, once thought to be a safe haven, may no longer be safe. Harry suspects that new dangers may lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Harry will have to help him uncover a vital key to unlocking Voldemort's defenses, a critical piece of information known only to Horace Slughorn, Hogwarts' former Potions Professor. Dumbledore manipulates his old colleague into returning to his previous post with promises of more money, a bigger office and the chance to teach the famous Harry Potter.

Personally, though I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter movies, the book by this title is much, much better. Why not stop in and check it out and decide for yourself?

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

This film was produced by Pam Marsden. The screenplay was written and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It is based on the original children’s book written by Judi Barrett and published in 1978. THANK YOU HITACHI!

The Green Free Library would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the Community Action
Committee of the Hitachi Metals Automotive Components and the Hitachi Foundation. We have received a generous grant from the above named benefactors, and the funds are being used to expand our DVD collection. Part of the money will be used to purchase a custom built (by Stan Flint) shelving unit to help house our growing collection. Another percentage has been used to replace titles of popular DVDs that have been stolen in the past 2 years. (Go figure? You can borrow for free!). We are also filling out popular series like Die Hard, Harry Potter, and the Lord of the Rings, so that we have all the movies in the series. The remaining funds will be used to purchase new DVDs throughout the year. This is truly a bounty to the library and its patrons, especially since the rotating collection from James V. Brown has been discontinued due to lack of funds.

LOCAL AUTHORS

Zeke Wilson, author of the autobiographical The Eighth Round, and his daughter, Florence Wilson, author of the fictional Teenage Vampire, visited The Green Free Library Thursday, Jan. 14.

Zeke, a former professional boxer, spoke about his experiences involving racial discrimination that led not only to his writing the book, but also "to set a federal precedent for all legal findings of same-race discrimination," according to Zeke. Florence, 15, talked about writing the first of what will be a five-book series to be released over the next two years.

The father and daughter team, both of whom are from northcentral Pennsylvania, also presented signed copies of their books to Library Director Leslie A. Wishard. The books will be available in the collection soon.

START THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW BOOK

The New Year has started at The Green Free Library, and thanks to the support of the community we are able to continue adding many great new books to the collection. Why not continue to show your support by coming in and checking one or two (or more-there is no limit!) of the following new titles, or any of the other books available for check out in the library. It's all in the numbers folks. Not just in the amount of money that is donated to help support the library, but in the usage of the items it houses.

A library card is free to any resident of Pennsylvania who has a valid PA DL or DMV ID, a Civilian ID (available at the Sheriff's office) or a current Military ID. If you own property in PA but don't have a PA DL, bring a copy of a tax notice and you can also apply. If you don't own property or have a valid PA DL-you can still get a library card by placing a refundable $25.00 deposit by check or cash –sorry no plastic! If you are under 17, you must bring a parent or legal guardian, who possesses the above form of ID to sign with you.

INTRODUCTION TO TAI CHI BY KAREN MEYERS

THIS WEEK AT THE GREEN FREE LIBRARY

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 the Book Club will be meeting in the main room of The Green Free Library (magazine area). They will be discussing "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. If you've read the book and would like to talk about it, please stop in from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M.

Brr! Why not take the chill away by joining Knitting Club and knitting a warm, comfy scarf? Actually, you can knit whatever you want (a scarf is all I can manage!) Knitting for adults meets upstairs on Wednesday's from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., and kids ages 10 to 16 years meet upstairs on Thursdays from 3:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. (knitting needles provided).

Wednesday morning Story Hour will be held, weather permitting, at 10:15 A.M. and last about 45 minutes. Please listen to the radio, or call 570-724-4876 for updates if the weather is bad.

The Author Talk has been rescheduled to this Thursday, January 14, 2010 from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. in the main room of the library. Zeke and Florence Wilson will be here to talk about their individual works, books are available for purchase and signing.

Thursday, January 7, 2010

AUTHORS' VISIT POSTPONED

The father and daughter authors scheduled to appear at The Green Free Library tonight, have postponed their visit until next week due to the possible inclimate weather that may be coming our way. Hope to see you next Thursday, January 14, 2010 between 6:00P.M. and 7:00 P.M.

The regularly scheduled meeting of the First Thursday's Writers Group will be meeting as planned, as no bad weather has hit our area as of yet!

THURSDAY UPDATE

Well it's Thursday and the Millennium System is still down. What does this mean? It means that The Green Free Library cannot update any computer records of books that are checked in, checked out, or placed on hold. Any fines on your account cannot be taken off either, so if you have paid and the fines still show up when you access MY MILLENNIUM from home, it is not our fault! Please be patient with library staff while they wait for this technical problem to be resolved. We are still open and writing down things by hand, but it will be several days (after the system is restored) before the mess is resolved.

One fairly good thing, the WebPAC has finally been restored meaning both patrons and staff can look up books (of course the status of whether the book is available or not will not always be accurate for awhile). Anyway, the library remains open for business, and staff will try to accommodate your needs as best they can. Thank you for your patience.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome to the new year on January 01, 2010. Some will pronounce that “twenty ten”, while others will say “two thousand ten.” Either way, we will be ushering the tenth year of the third millennium. Here’s hoping it’s a good one! The Green Free Library will be closed on December 31, 2009 as well as January 01 & 02, 2010. It is of course always closed on Sundays as well. The library will re-open (weather permitting) at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 03, 2010. The bookdrop is open for anyone wanting to return books, just remember not to put audio or visual materials in the bookdrop. If you need to renew books or audio material, call and leave a message at 724-4876, or renew them online through you’re my Millennium account. Please do not E-mail renewals as the E-mail address of greenlib@epix.net is not accessible by library staff-only the director.
