CLOSED FOR NEW YEARS HOLIDAY

The Green Free Library will be closed Friday December 31, 2010 and Saturday January 01, 2011. It is, of course, always closed on Sundays, and will re-open for normal hours on Monday, January 3, 2011, at 10:00 AM. Normal hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 10:00 AM-8:00 PM and Friday & Saturday 10:00 AM t0 5:00 PM.

To renew books please call 570-724-4876 (leave a message if the library is closed) or renew on line through your My Millennium account. Books that are overdue and have incurred fines over $1.00 can't be renewed online and cardholders must come into the library during normal operating hours and pay all fines before renewing items. Books with fines less than $1.00 may be renewed online and the fine paid during the next library visit. Please do not put fine money inside books that are returned in the bookdrop, since all fines are now posted on the computer and this may cause a problem with crediting the proper account. Books that have been placed on hold for someone else also can't be renewed online.

DVDs, VHS tapes, magazines and 7-day books can't be renewed at all.

THIS WEEK AT THE LIBRARY

December has been a busy month at The Green Free Library. Over 400 visitors (regular patrons as well as guests), stopped by the open house, hosted by The Friends of The Green Free Library on Dickens of a Christmas.

Santa arrived to a rousing chorus of “Here Comes Santa Claus” last Wednesday during Story Hour. Santa read to the crowd, then the group split in to two smaller groups. While one group pranced off to make a special Christmas craft, the remaining group took turns sitting on Santa’s lap for pictures, and to get in some last minute gift suggestions for the jolly old elf to deliver! Then of course, the groups switched places so everyone got a turn at all the fun.

The library staff has been busy as Christmas elves accepting donations for the annual appeal, and for the Library Angel tree. There is still time to contribute to either project, or both! Remember the library is a non-profit organization and all donations are tax-deductible.

There will be no Story Hour for the rest of December, so kids and their families can prepare for the upcoming merriment.

I still need to verify if the knitting clubs will be meeting, and will post as soon as I get the word. If you have any questions, fell free to call the library during normal business hours of 10:00 AM-8:00 PM Monday-Thursday, and 10:00 AM-5:00 PM on Friday & Saturday. The phone number is 570-724-4876

REMEMBER

If the weather is bad, please call or check the website before venturing out on slippery roads to see if the library has a delayed opening, or is closed for the day. This information is also available on local radio stations, and the automated message on the answering machine if the library is closed. Again, the phone number is 570-724-4876.

Also consider that library fines, especially for DVDS/VHS tapes are only waived if the library is closed. This is Tioga County after all, and just because there are bad roads in one township doesn’t necessarily mean there are bad roads in all the townships. Only you know what the roads can be like in your area, if bad weather is forecasted, either bring your movies back early, don’t check any out until after the storm, or pay the fine if the library is open and you choose not to come out to return them. The staff of The Green Free Library thanks you for not arguing about fines you have incurred through your own decision!

REMINDER

The Green Free Library will be closed between the hours of 11:15 AM and 1:30 PM on Tuesday, December 7th, for the staff Christmas luncheon. The book drop will be open for returns and on this day only, videos, DVDs and audio materials may be placed in the book drop without incurring a fine!

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO THE GREEN FREE LIBRARY

He's making a list (of overdue library books) and checking it twice! Return your overdue library books or any that are just due and at the same time, bring the kids to see good old Saint Nick on Wednesday morning at The Green Free Library. Time of arrival, barring any cranky reindeer should be around 10:15 AM. There will also be a special Christmas craft and treats for all.

CLOSED FOR CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

The Green Free Library will be closed between the hours of 11:15 AM and 1:30 PM on Tuesday, December 7th, for the staff Christmas luncheon. The book drop will be open for returns and on this day only, videos, DVDs and audio materials may be placed in the book drop without incurring a fine!

BE A LIBRARY ANGEL

The Green Free Library is asking you to be a "Library Angel" this holiday season. Please stop in and check out our "Angel Tree", and help support the library and the community. Thanks to major budgets cuts from the state of Pennsylvania, library resources are even tighter than usually for the upcoming year. Why not choose an ornament from the tree and purchase the book or DVD to donate to the library. Or if you choose to just donate money to purchase the item, the director will order it for you. A special book plate will be placed on the item with the donos name and they may be first to check out that item if they so desire. This would also make a great gift in someone's name for the holiday season. Thank you for your support.

NEW BOOKS ADDED

Time is passing quickly! (More quickly than I am posting). Here is a list of several new books added to the collection of The Green Free Library in the beginning of the month. Several titles have been designated as Christmas (eek). A few titles are obviously Christmas related but not marked. So what's the difference? The library has a limited amount of shelf space. Christmas books are stored in the basement for several months of the year and only brought up for circulation between October and January. These titles are all marked in the catalog and with a special Christmas sticker. Some authors of popular series always include a Christmas title so most of those works are included with the regular collection. As always, if there are any questions-ASK!
