LOTS OF ACTIVITY

Patrons and visitors to The Green Free Library have probably noticed a lot of activity around the building during the last few weeks. Old buildings need a lot of TLC. Painters have been touching up the outside of the building and painting the porches (in between rain storms). Window washers have also been applying a little elbow grease (in between rain showers-???). And, last but not least the local gas company has been moving the gas meter from the spooky, scary basement to the outside of the building. Hopefully the lawn will grow back soon!

PIPE LINE PROJECT INFORMATION AVAILABLE

The Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company has left documentation at The Green Free Library relating to the Proposed 300 line project that will affect parts of northern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. Those with property that will be affected should receive a letter from the company. A notice will also appear in the WELLSBORO GAZETTE LEGAL NOTICE SECTION.

Four binders containing information on the project, as well as several large maps are available for the public to study in the main room of the library. A copy of Tennessee's Application is available online at the Commission's website.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO JUST PLAIN BOOKWORMS??

The Green Free Library, along with half of Wellsboro had many unwelcome visitors last week. For some reason hundreds of, what has been identified by Jeff Himes of the Penn State Co-operative Extension Office as Eastern Tent Caterpillar Moths decided to stop at the library and several other local businesses in town.

According to the Internet, Eastern Tent Caterpillar Moths are rarely seen. Huh, could of fooled me, they were everywhere! They lay hundreds of eggs in a mass, in mid-summer. The eggs hatch the following spring and the larvae are very small at first. The little caterpillars climb into the fork of a tree and build a silky, tent like nest. They come out during the day to feed and return to the protection of the nest at night. The tiny caterpillars grow to about 2 inches in length in the six to eight weeks that they feed. They then look for a place to pupate, and build a cocoon. The cocoon stage lasts about three weeks. When the moth leaves the cocoon it is already an adult, and off to seek a mate to start the entire process again. Hopefully they didn't pupate on the library!

Though they were certainly messy, the moths pose no danger and don't do any harm themselves. The caterpillars that hatch from their eggs do feed upon tree leaves and shrubs, but this defoliation is only harmful to really young trees.

UPDATE ON LAST WEEKS FUN EVENTS

Fourteen people got together for The Green Free Library's first book discussion last Tuesday, July 14. A novella entitled "The Uncommon Reader", was chosen for the first reading. This work is by British author and playwright, Alan Bennett, and is touted by Publishers Weekly as "a funny little book". Most of us agreed, with only one dissenter in the group. Perhaps she needs to visit the Queen's dungeon in the Tower of London?

On Saturday, July 18th, the library closed its doors to regular visitors at 2:00 PM, and became a Teen Zone! Twelve local teens came together to play video games, board games, and just hang out! If you missed out on the fun, don't worry. Teen Game Day was declared a hit, please stay tuned for future events!

NEW FAMILY DVD

The Green Free Library has added a new DVD to its collection.

Inkheart is a great fantasy movie for families to share on a summers eve. This title was originally released ass a motion picture in 2008, with the DVD premiere in the US on January 23, 2009, by New Line Home Entertainment.

Running time is 106 minutes and this movie is MPAA rated PG for fantasy adventure action, some scary moments and brief language. Parents click here for additional information on that rating.

Inkheart is based on the book of the same title, by Cornelia Funke , published in 2003 by New York : Scholastic Inc. / The Chicken House 2003.

Cast:

Brendan Fraser as Mo “Silvertongue’ Folchart
Sienna Guillory as Resa
Eliza Hope Bennett as Meggie Folchart

Paul Bettany as Dustfinger
Helen Mirren as Elinor Loredan
Rafi Gavron as Farid
Jamie Foreman as Basta
Andy Serkis as Capricorn
Jennifer Connelly as Roxanne
Jim Broadbent as Fenoglio
Roger Allam as the Narrator

Summary from the WebPAC:

When Mo Folchart reads a story aloud, the characters leap off the page. Literally. And that's a problem. One night he brings out three characters from Inkheart, a story set in medieval times and filled with magical beings. Capricorn and Basta are two villains. Dustfinger is a fire-eater. Now, 10 years later Mo's daughter, Meggie, discovers the truth and it's up to her to escape Capricorn's evil grasp. Mo has been searching for a long lost book that will help so he can use his special powers to the interlopers back to their world

Inkheart is the first installment in the Inkheart Trilogy of books, and the first to be made into a movie. Inkspell is the second title, released in 2005, and Inkdeath is the final installment and was published in 2008. HAPPY 4th OF JULY

Photobucket

The staff of The Green free Library would like to wish all patrons and visitors a HAPPY and SAFE FOURTH OF JULY.

Independence days, more commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday that commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in which the United States declares independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. It is a holiday unique to the USA, though other countries may have similar holidays celebrated on their own specific dates.

The legal separation of the colonies from Great Britain actually occurred on July 2, 1776. It was on this date during the American Revolution, that the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence. Though Thomas Jefferson is credited with authoring the Declaration of In dependence, the actually resolution was written by Richard Henry Lee, an American Statesman from Virginia. This proposal was known as the Lee Resolution, or the resolution of independence; it was made on June 7, 1776, and was approved on July 2, 1776.

The text of the final document formally announcing the action was approved on July 4, 1776. I t was prepared by Thomas Jefferson, as its principal author, along with John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman comprising a Committee of Five. This document was the United States Declaration of Independence.

The library is closed on Friday, July 3 and Saturday July 4, 2009, so that the Director and staff members may celebrate and enjoy this time with their family and friends.

Normal operatiing hours are:

Monday-Thursday 10:00 AM-8:00 PM

Friday & Saturday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM
