KNOWLEDGE IS FREE

As you may recall, the marketing class from MU, in cooperation with The Green Free Library, hosted a Knowledge Yardsale on Saturday, March 28, 2009. Thank you, MU students. The weather was beautiful, and several local people turned out to see what was happening.

There was fun and food for all, but even more important a whole lot of knowledge was given away for free! The knowledge of what great resources you can find at The Green Free Library.

Power Library is just one of those resources. It provides information and access to magazine and newspaper articles, car repair manuals, health information, a major encyclopedia and image resources for teachers, writers and any one else who is interested plus much, much more!

There are also special reference materials specifically for school-age youths. They are available to homeschoolers, as well as students in public or private schools.

All you need to access them is a Green Free Library card, which is also free! It is easy to get a library card, just come on in with your PA driver’s license, citizens ID, or your parent or guardian if you are under the age of 17. If you don't have one of these forms of ID, a photo ID and a $25 refundable deposit may be substituted. (Special arrangements are available for property owners who only live in the area part-time).

Once you have your card, you may access Power Library from any Internet accessible computer. Just start here.

Tutorials on how to search Power Library resources may be found here.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR MONETARY SUPPORT

It is time to close the annual appeal. A big thank you to everyone that dug deep at a difficult time to help support The Green Free Library.

As many of you know, the budget for this year is incredibly tight. In order to help supplement the decreased funding, the board allowed us to send out the first appeal letter asking for donations since the capital campaign launched several years ago for renovations.

Donations in the amount of just over $8,900 were raised, slightly short of the goal of $10,000. Even though the first annual appeal (as we are calling it) has ended the library will gratefully accept donations throughout the year. The Green Free Library is a non-profit organization so any donations you make are considered tax-deductible and we will be happy to provide you with a receipt.

Why does the library need so much money?

The Green Free Library relies on interest provided through investments and endowments. As everyone is aware the economy is in bad shape, and the stock mark is doing poorly, thus the amount of interest earned is less than usual. The cost of basic utilities has almost doubled in the last year, supply costs have increased, and even books cost more.

Doesn’t the library get money from the State?

Yes, but once again that money has been reduced by several thousand dollars. Costs have gone up, funding has gone down. Get the picture?

The Director is also working diligently to search out and apply for grants to provide additional and continued services to benefit library patrons of all ages.

Can’t the library reduce its spending?

Well let’s see, if we turn off the lights it’s hard to read the titles of the books. If we turn off the heat, it gets mighty uncomfortable for staff and patrons. If we stop buying books, that kind of defeats the purpose of being a library, doesn’t it? Though we have reduced the number of books we purchase. Unfortunately this means some people don't see their favorite authors on the shelf.

With the decline in the economy providing less disposable income for families, and putting several individuals out of work, public library usage has risen drastically. Public libraries provide many, many services for free.

Here at The Green Free Library you can check out books, magazines, music CDS, movies on VHS and DVD, audio-cassettes/CDS/CD-ROMS to learn a foreign language and books on AC/CD/and Playaway for FREE!

There are also four public Internet Access computers and Wi-Fi service for those with their own laptops that are available for FREE! (Printing however, does cost 10 ¢ per page-and is only available through the library’s computers at this time.)

If you would like to make a donation to The Green Free Library visit here for downloadable forms, or just stop by the library. Any donation, no matter how big or how small is appreciated. One $25 donation will buy an adult best seller, or 2 children’s’ books.

The Library is doing everything it can to keep services free, and available to all who need them in this difficult period of America's history. In order not to reduce hours of operation, we are relying on the generosity of the community.

If you cannot afford to make a cash donation the library will also be pleased to accept gifts of new DVDs or those that have been viewed only once or twice and are not scratched. Some books in very good condition and recently published may also be used on the shelf, other items will be donated to the Friends of the Green Free Library for their annual booksale in June. These items are also tax-deductible, though the staff of the library, and the Friends only acknowledge the types and numbers of items received with signed receipt. It is up to those making the donation to provide a value for tax-records.

MORE FUN, MORE FUN, SO DON'T YOU RUN

As part of the celebration for Dr. Seuss, the new toys, furniture and equipment for the children’s room were unveiled. The children had a wonderful time playing with the new floor pillows, and musical instruments on the colorful new bunny rug.

The generous new additions were purchased with grant money donated by Preschool Connections and their Public Library Resources for Infant & Toddle Programs. They receive their funding through the Pennsylvania Dept. of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries and are supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under provisions of the LST act.

The Green Free Library also received a new Early Literacy Station Computer for children to use. This computer is a self-contained system that includes 34 ready to use educational software programs representing 7 curricular areas. The purpose of these programs is to reinforce the skills children need to develop successful reading habits and school readiness.

TWO NEW DVDs

The Green Free Library has added two new DVDs to its collection.

The 4oth Anniversery Edition of Mary Poppins is one supercalifragilisticexpialidocious movie that the entire family will enjoy. Though it's not clear why it is called the 40th Anniversary edition when the film was released in 1964? Oh well, it is still a great film based on the books by P.L. Travers.

The movie stars Julia Andrews, who won an Oscar for her role of the magical British nanny named Mary Poppins. It also stars Dick Van Dyke as the very musical chimney sweep named Bert who fancies the nanny.

The father's character of George W. Tomlinson is played by David Tomlinson, while the mother's character of Winifred banks is played by Glynis Johns. Jane and Michael their two children are played by Karen Dotrice and Mathew Garber, respectively.

The second DVD added this month is The Express: The Ernie Davis Story. This movie stars Rob Brown as Ernie Davis and Dennis Quaid as Ben Schwartzwalder. It is based on the book entitled Ernie Davis: The Elmira Express, by Robert C. Gallagher which we also have.

Ernie Davis was the first African American athlete to win the Heisman Trophy. He was born in New Salem, Pennsylvania and moved a few times before his family settled in Elmira, New York when he was 12 years old. He played in Elmira's Small Fry Football league and was named Small Fry All-Star in 1952 and 1953.

In high school he played football for Elmira Free Academy and was named Elmira player of the year and All-American in both his junior and senior years of high school.

Even though over 50 colleges offered him scholarships, Davis decided to go to Syracuse University where is football career continued rocketing him into the Pros. Please visit the library and check out the DVD to learn the rest of his story.

SAYING FAREWELL TO THREE GREAT AUTHORS

The Literary community mourns the passing of 3 great authors in the last few weeks.

Sir John Clifford Mortimer died Friday January 16, 2009 at his home in Oxford England. He is best known for his series of books written about the character Horace Rumpole.

Mortimer, like Rumpole was also a barrister as well as an author and playwright. He was born April 21, 1923 in London

The Green Free has many of his works including: Dunster;Felix in the Underworld; and several of the Rumpole series.

John Hoyer Updike was born March 18, 1932 in Reading, Pennsylvania. He died on January 27, 2009 in Danvers, Massachusetts. His most famouse were were the Rabbit series(Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabbit is Rich; Rabbit At Rest; and Rabbit Remembered. Both Rabbit is Rich and Rabbit at Rest received the Pulitzer Prize Award.

During his lifetime, Updike published more than 25 novels, over a dozen short story collections, and hundred of poems, stories, criticisms and reviews.

The Green Free Library's collection contains 40 of his works including the Rabbit series; Hugging the Shore: Essays and Criticism and his childrens books: A Child's Calendar and A Helpful Alphabet of Friendly Objects.

James Winston Brady died also on Monday January 27, 2009 at his home in Manhattan, New York. He was born November 15, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York and served several years in the Marine Corp before beginning his career as an author, publisher and columnist.

He is perhaps best known for his weekly column "In Step", for Parade, but also helped start the Page Six gossip column at the New York Post.

The Green Free Library has several of his fiction and non-fiction works including "The scariest place in the world : a marine returns to North Korea" and "The Marines of autumn : a novel of the Korean War "

To see what other works The Green Free Library has by these, and other authors check out our on line catalog.

WOOD CARVINGS by SUSIE KARSCHNER

The Green Free Library is proud to exhibit a display of extraordinary wood carvings by local artist, Susie Karschner. Working in medium including basswood, butternut, oak and Tagua nuts, the artist has created works of whimsy including several carousel animals, a Great Blue Heron, and my particular favorite, a striking oak leaf (carved from oak) with an extremely life-like visage. Please stop by in the next five weeks to view and appreciate this display .

The collection of The Green Free Library includes many books on woodworking, carving, and other related subjects. Check the online catalog at http://www.greenfreelibrary.org/, or use the Webpacs(computerised card catalogs) at the library. As always, staff members are available to assist you either in person or on the phone. The phone number is 570-724-4876

Note: Tagua nuts are also called Ivory nuts because they are white inside. They are harvested from palm trees that grow in areas ranging from southern Panama, along the Andes to Bolivia and Peru.Their scientific name-Phytelephas,means "plant elephant" and refers to the very hard, white endosperms of their seeds that resemble elephant ivory.

Note: Carousels and carousel animals-Though today most carousels or merry-go-rounds in the US usually sport only carved horses, earlier American and European carousels included a whole menagerie of other animals. They included zebras, pigs, and rabbits, to name a few. All of the carousel animals face in the same direction with the "Romance" side facing outward. In Europe carousels usually turn in a clockwise direction, while in the US they turn counter-clockwise.

Note: The reintroduction of the American gray wolf into Yellowstone National Park, and other locations of the US began in 1995. The first wolves were considered "experimental, non-essential" populations as per article 10 (j) of the Endangered Species Act. This classification gave the government greater leeway in dealing with problem wolves. This was in response to a compromise made with concerned local ranchers.

Efforts to begin the reintroduction of the gray wolf actually began in 1966. The last indigenous gray wolves in the area were killed off in 1926.The loss of the wolf and its part in the Eco-system led to an overpopulous of elk and other large prey animals as well as damage to new growth vegetation. Overgrazing of the out of control elk population caused the crash of deciduous woody species like the upland aspen and riparian cottonwood. This affected the habitat of several other species. The coyote population increased drastically but they could not control the growing populations of elk, deer and other animals. Their large numbers did however lead to a decline in the numbers of red fox in the area.

When studies supported the need for reintroduction of the gray wolf into the Eco-system, three areas were chosen including: the Greater Yellowstone Area, an area in Idaho, and one in Montana. The Montana recovery zone was eliminated from the plan after it was discovered that a small, but breeding wolf population had already moved into the northwestern part of the state on their own accord.
