IF YOU TAKE A LAMB TO THE LIBRARY

…you make
a lot
of
kids happy!

The story hour participants had a special surprise visitor at The Green Free Library on Wednesday, April 7, 2010.

A week old lamb and her owners (Keith & Hilma Cooper of Wellsboro, PA) stopped in to say hello! Keith and Hilma own and operate Arvgarden Bed & Breakfast here in Wellsboro, where they also raise corriedale sheep. The lamb stole the hearts of many youngsters (of all ages as you can see by the pictures below).

SIGNS OF SPRING!

Finally! Even though the temp outside is freezing, Spring has sprung. Thank you Madalene Axford Murphy of Wellsboro for sharing these inspiring photos with us here at The Green Free Library, and allowing us to share with everyone out there. It is only a matter of time (hopefully days if the radio is to be believed) before we see a rise in temperatures and Spring bursts forth in all her glory.

PHOTOS WANTED!

Happy Spring from The Green Free Library!!

The calender says Spring is here, but everyone in Tioga County knows anything can happen. Just to keep the hope alive, I am looking for photos from anyone in the county showing signs of Spring. Please send digital photos saved in .jpg format to thegreenfreelibrary@gmail.com, or drop off a print that I can scan. All photos will be posted to the blog, and will include patron's name and town.

The above photo was taken by moi, in front of the Gmeiner. Technically it was the second sign of Spring that I have seen, but those darn robbins are just to fast for me!

GUEST POET-MRS ESTHER WATKINS

SPRING

What is the meaning of spring

The teacher asked one day

To her class of little boys and girls

To hear what they would say

As she scanned the little faces

To find an answer there

When she caught sight of an upraised hand

And a confident childish stare

Well Tommy, what is your answer

She asked the little lad

Whose face lit up with an eager smile

As he rose to his feet and said

When you see lots of kids on skates

And playing marbles too

And all the girls are jumping rope

And there's a happy feeling in you

When you hate to sit and study

And you can't remember a thing

When that lazy feeling gets you

Then you know it's spring

HAPPY EASTER

Happy Easter to the patrons and guests of The Green Free Library.
Even if it’s hard to tell by the weather, Easter is definitely a harbinger of Spring. It is a time to enjoy family and friends, perhaps engage in religious reflection and to experience a sense of renewal as the tiny green shoots struggle to push through the last layer of frost, and the budding daffodils and crocus shiver in the icy morning dew.

Not only is it a great time to think about cleaning out the winter cobwebs in your mind, it is also the perfect time to start cleaning out some of the books, CDS, DVDS and VHS tapes that you no longer use or need.

The Friends of the Green Free Library accept donations all year round for their annual book sale in June. Hard covers, paperbacks, movies and music in good, clean condition are greatly appreciated. Materials such as old encyclopedias, magazines and outdated textbooks can not be used and actually end up costing the library money to dispose of..

The library staff also check donations for items that may be added to the circulating collection. This helps the library save money and it saves a few trees as well!

Why not make everyone happy and start collecting items today? Just box them up, or recycle some of those plastic bags (please try to double bag if possible-books are heavy and they need to be carried to the basement). If you have just one or two boxes/bags, come on in the front door and set them on the bench. If you have several boxes/bags, call ahead at 570-724-4876, or pull around the circle and stop next to the door on the side with the lattice work trellis, That door is kept locked, so you will need to come in the back door, or front door and a staff member will be glad to open it up for you. If you have a trailer full of boxes, or need help getting donations to the library, just call the library at 570-724-4876 and a staff member will take your name and phone number to forward to Friends members that are in charge of the book sale. Its so easy to donate-there are no excuses not to!

WELCOME SPRING!!!

Spring

Ahh, it was a balmy 16 degrees here in Wellsboro when I got up this morning. Stop shivering and start celebrating. It's Spring! (Don't worry, we still have 10 days to prove the old adage; In like a lion, out like a lamb:)

A big thank you to the 2 patrons and 1 staff member who answered the call of Spring, and the call of Sandy (me), for submissions to help us shake off the Winter doldrums. Here they are in the order they were received:

Compliments of Ms. Geryl Stabley of Wellsboro, a little tidbit she likes to post on her answering machine:

Spring has sprung,
the grass has ris.
I wonder were
the lawnmower is?

Contibuted by library staff member, and 8th grade teacher(NTSD) Jessica Spencer:

Animal Behavior

The first day of March showed no sign of hope,

With bitter-cold temperatures and snow covered slopes.

March had arrived coming in like a lion,

    Roaring and clawing and desperately trying;

To keep spring sequestered and faint in our minds,

As the days they approached to push ahead time.

The mornings grew dark as the nights lingered on.

The snow melted away and uncovered the lawns.

The daffodils and iris’ peeked out of the ground,

A little bit leery of Old Man Winter’s sound.

A quick turn of the wind and a shift in the clouds,

Dropped water or snow by the bucket or pound.

We dropped our heads, but knew in our hearts,

That the battle was being won by the warmth.

For as the third month approached its end,

The animal mentioned is more of a friend.

A sign of fresh flowers and dirt covered hands,

That March will surely go out like a lamb.

-Jessica Spencer

And with special thanks to Miss Grace L., Homeschooler 4th grade

Spring

Spring is going to be here soon;

the time when all the flowers bloom

And when the air is fresh and clean,

its the prettiest season you've ever see.

When the lilies are fresh and new:

But when Spring is near, its the best time of year,

I like Spring, don't you?
