NEW DVDS

I seem to have gotten a little behind as the end of the year DVDs have come flooding in. We need to use up all our points! The Green Free Library has added the following titles to its rapidly growing collection of DVDs:

Walt Disney Pictures presents a Pixar Animation Studios film; produced by Jonas Rivera. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment; Distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, c2009.

This film was written and directed by Peter Docter and Bob Peterson. It was released in theaters on May 29, 2009 and on DVD on Nov 10, 2009. It was nominated for 2 Golden Globe awards as well as several other awards.

Carl Fredericksen is a 78- year-old curmudgeon. He used to enjoy his modest life as a balloon seller when his adventure-loving wife Ellie was still alive. When she died, Carl was left with his memories and the awareness that they never made their dream journey to Paradise Falls in South America. When well-meaning officials consign Carl to Shady Oaks Retirement Home, he rigs thousands of helium balloons to his house and floats away. He discovers that Russell, a chubby Wilderness Explorer Scout has stowed away. In the tropical jungle, Carl and Russell find more than they bargained for. Charles Muntz is a crazed explorer whose newsreels once inspired Carl and Ellie; Kevin is an exotic bird with a weakness for chocolate; and Dug who is an endearingly golden retriever fitted with a voice box. More importantly, Carl and Russell discover they need each other.

Summary from the WebPAC: When the Museum of Natural History is closed for renovations, the museum pieces are moved into federal storage at the famous Smithsonian Institution. It houses the world's largest museum complex with more than 136 million items in its collections. These range from the plane Amelia Earhart flew on her non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic and Al Capone's rap sheet and mug shot to Dorothy's ruby slippers. From Fonzie's leather jacket to Archie Bunker's lounge chair. After stealing a security guard's ID badge, Larry Daley slips into the Archives of the Smithsonian, where Kahmunrah, an evil Pharaoh, comes to life with the reestablishing of The Tablet as a magical force in the museum. It brings the old exhibits and new exhibits to life, and in conflict with each other. Larry enlists the help of Amelia Earhart.

Terminator Salvation

The Halcyon Company presents a Moritz Borman production in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision, a McG film. This film was produced by Moritz Borman, Jeffrey Silver, Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson and directed by McG.It was written
by John Brancato & Michael Ferris. The film came out in theaters on May 21, 2009. The DVD was distributed by Warner Home Video, Dec 01, 2009.

The Green Free Library has added the first in what looks like an exciting new series.

The author promises a new book each month for 12 months. Callum (Cal) Ormond's father has been murdered. On New Year's Day, Cal is chased by a staggering, sick man who issues the deadly warning-"They killed your father. They'll kill you. You must survive the next 365 days!"

Join Cal on his dangerous quest to find the killers before they find him. Check out the book and follow the clues. NO STORY HOUR

There will be no Story Hour at The Green Free Library this week, or next week, to give everyone a chance to recover from the holidays. Story Hour will resume at 10:15 A.M. on January 13, 2010. If you are new to the program, registration is not required, but is appreciated. There are two age groups-Infants through age three, and Pre-schoolers age three to five. Your child (or children) will love the songs, games, stories and crafts, as well as the chance to make new friends. As always in the wonderful Wellsboro winter weather, please check the local radio stations for weather related cancellations, closings or delays. You may also call the library at 570-724-4876 for a recorded message on the answering machine.

Are your kids driving you crazy? Why not bring them to The Green Free Library and let them check out one of the new titles recently added to the Robinson Room collection? Books in this room are available for everyone, but are specifically geared towards readers from 3^rd through 12^th grade. Titles included in the YA section may include content that is slightly more mature than books marked with a J. This room is where you will also find popular series such as Harry Potter, Twilight, Lemony Snicket, the Warriors series, and many, many more great series.

The Green Free Library is happy to announce that through the efforts of our esteemed Director, the generosity of the Friends of the Green Free Library and an additional benefactor, we have been able to re-instate the HeritageQuest database!

For those of you who aren't aware, HeritageQuest is a treasure trove to genealogists and those just starting to search for their family tree. The collection consists of access to the U.S. Federal census from 1790 through 1930 (though 1930 is only partially complete), Genealogy and local history books, PERSI (Periodical Source Index, Revolutionary War Records, Freedman's Bank Records, and LexisNexis U.S. Serial Set

Those of us who use HeritageQuest to assist patrons, as well as for our own personal usage, were devastated when we were informed that the district would no longer be able to support this valuable tool. (Boo! once again to the state and their stinky budget). Thanks to some fast thinking by the library's director; Leslie Wishard, the staff and patrons, along with visitors to the library, will be able to access this valuable database for at least another two years. After that, we'll have to see.

END THE YEAR WITH A GOOD BOOK

The year 2009 is almost at an end. Why not end the year with a good book? The Green Free Library has added these great titles to the collection. Stop in soon and check one out. Our collection of books for children from birth to about 3^rd grade is very popular. The addition of the following titles is sure to please current and future readers. SANTA CLAUS is coming to The Green Free Library!

Stop in on Wednesday December 16, 2009 at 10:15 AM to visit the jolly old elf himself. Bring a camera and the kids, there's no need to pay those outrageous prices at the mall. If you aren't a regular story time visitor, now is the perfect time to check out what the library has to offer. Just give us a call at 570-724-4876 and let us know how many of your family will be coming.

NEW DISPLAY FOR DECEMBER

Come to The Green Free Library this month to see the adorable dolls on display for the month of December. Keeping with the Dickens tradition, Ruth Rawson of Wellsboro has been kind enough to let us display her collection of dolls sporting hand crocheted clothing from the era. St. Nick also makes an appearance, along with one of his reindeer dressed for the season in a red & white crocheted gown with lace.

If seeing the displays gets your own creative juices flowing, the library has all of its Christmas craft books on display to tempt you. Also several Christmas movies, music, novels, cookbooks, and songbooks are also available, so make a list and check it twice, the season is upon us.

The library will be closed December 24, 25, 26, and 27. It will Re-open on December 28 at 10:00 AM. The bookdrop is open while the library is closed if you forgot to return books, but you will definitely be put on the naughty list if you put DVD's, VHS tapes or any audio material in the bookdrop!

THREE NEW DVD'S

The Green Free Library has added three very popular new releases to its DVD collection.





Star Trek

Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment present a Bad Robot production, Paramount Pictures released it in theaters in March 2009, and on DVD in November of 2009 (Almost at warp speed!)

This movie was produced and directed by the great J.J. Abrams. It was also produced by Damon Lindelof. The script was written by Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, based on the T.V. series by Gene Roddenberry.

This DVD has a running time of 127 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action and violence, and brief sexual content. Parents click here for additional information.

Summary from Web PAC: On the day of James Kirk's birth, his father dies on his ship in a last stand against a mysterious alien vessel. He was searching for Ambassador Spock, who is a child on Vulcan, disdained by his neighbors for his half-human nature. Twenty years later, Kirk has grown into a young troublemaker. He is inspired by Capt. Christopher Pike to fulfill his potential in Starfleet, even though he annoys his instructors. Suddenly, there is an emergency on Vulcan when the Romulan Nero comes from the future to take revenge on the Federation. The newly commissioned USS Enterprise is crewed with promising cadets like Uhura, Sulu, Chekov and even Kirk himself thanks to Leonard McCoy's medical trickery. Together, this crew will travel to the final frontier where the old legend is altered forever.

I will admit I was skeptical at first, after all it took several episodes to warm up to Picard, and even longer to accept Janeway, so when I heard they were making a new Star Trek, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t even recognize Winona Ryder as Spock’s mother, and what a surprising storyline that was. But even more surprising was what happened with Kirk! I won’t say any more-come check it out for yourself.



My Sister's Keeper

New Line Cinema presents a Mark Johnson/Curmudgeon/Scott L. Goldman production. It is directed by Nick Cassavetes film and produced by Mark Johnson, Chuck Pacheco, and Scott L. Goldman. The screenplay was written by Jeremy Leven and Nick Cassavetes. The script was based on the 2004 novel of the same title by Jodi Picoult. The film was released in theaters in June 2009 and on DVD in November of 2009.

This DVD has a running time of 110 minutes and a rating of PG-13; for mature thematic content, some disturbing images, sensuality, language and brief teen drinking. Parents click here for additional information.

Gordon, Stuart Beattie and Stephen Sommers while the screenplay was written by Stuart Beattie , David Elliotand Paul Lovett.

Summary from the Web PAC: Weapons expert James McCullen has created a nanotechnology-based weapon capable of destroying an entire city. His company MARS sells four warheads to NATO, and the U.S. Army is tasked with delivering the warheads. Duke and Ripcord are delivering the warheads when they are ambushed by the Baroness. The two are rescued by Scarlett, Snake Eyes and Heavy Duty. They take the warheads to the G.I. Joe's command center, rendezvousing with General Hawk. McCullen is revealed to be using the same nanotechnology to build an army of soldiers with the aid of the Doctor. Storm Shadow and the Baroness use a tracing device to find the weapons and take them to Baron DeCobray for him to weaponize and use them to destroy the Eiffel Tower. The Joe's pursue them through the streets but are unsuccessful in stopping them from launching the missile. Duke manages to hit the kill switch, but in doing so he is captured and taken to McCullen's base under the Arctic. While Scarlett and Snake Eyes attempt to shut down the Arctic base, Duke learns who the Doctor really is.

OUCH, THAT HURTS!!

The effects of the budget cuts are already beginning to be felt in the land of Pennsylvania libraries.

 

The district library announced that it would no longer be sponsoring "Heritage Quest", a database that it provided to all the libraries in the district. Heritage Quest was a wonderful tool, much used by patrons of The Green Free Library for genealogical research. Through it, one could access federal census records for not just Tioga County, but the entire United States. The link has already been removed and all users will be unhappy to see it go.

 

The hatchet has also fallen on the rotating collection of DVDs that travel throughout the district, changing every two months to provide around 30 current and classic DVDs to libraries that are not able to purchase them. We will have one more rotation in the library for December/January, then no more.

 

Also, the State, in its infinite wisdom, will no longer be supporting the Millennium System that we and several other Pennsylvania libraries use for cataloging and circulation. What does this mean? It means in an already precarious financial position for the upcoming year, all of these libraries will have to come up with several thousand dollars to purchase a new system for cataloging and circulation. Thanks so much for that Pennsylvania!

 

What can I say? It's only downhill from here.

 

But it's not too late to help. The library is still accepting donations for its annual appeal. All donations are tax deductible and a receipt will be provided. Any amount is equally appreciated from $1.00 to $1000. ($100,000 and up would be appreciated a little more LOLJ

Summary from WebPAC: Georgia came to Greece to follow a man. Cast aside, she finds herself alone and adrift in this foreign land.
