What's Happening at The Green Free Library

It is going to be a busy week at The Green Free Library! Please check the schedule, especially if the weather gets bad.

MONDAY

There will be an E-Reader workshop for thiose that already own a device in the main room of the library. The topics covered will include how to download books (audio & E-books from the Ebranch2go site connected to The Green Free Library. You must have a valid Green Free Library card at the time of the workshop (those with cards from other libraries may find the information useful, but will need to choose their library instead of The Green Free Wellsboro in the dropdown menu. Please bring your device and your laptop if you have one. Some laptops will be available for demonstration purposes. The workshop begins at 5:30 PM.

TUESDAY

The library will not open until 2:00 PM today. More staff training. Believe me, we don't like it any more than you do.

The Friends of The Green Free Library will be hosting a free program in the library on Tuesday, Jan 31, 2012, beginning at 7:00 PM. Kate Sholonski (Certified Life Coach) will talk about her new book Wide Awake: Three Minutes a Day to an Inspired Life. The book is co-authored by David Larson. Snowdate for this event will be Feb 1.

WEDNESDAY

Happy Groundhog Day!!(a little early) Crawl out of your warm bed and come to Story Time in the Children's Room of the library. The program begins at 10:15 AM so don't be late or there will be six more weeks of Winter and it will be all your fault.

Adult knitting will meet in the main room of the library at 3:00 PM. Come and learn a new craft, or practice an old one. Knitters of all levels are welcome. The group has also set up a display in the case that is located inside the main door of the library. You will really get wrapped up in the beutiful pieces on display.

THURSDAY

Kids knitting will meet upstairs in the library beginning at 3:30 PM. Knitters of any level are welcome, but must be at least school-age. Adults who can't make the Wednesday session are encouraged to drop by to give and receive help.

CLOSING AGAIN!

The Green Free Library
will open today, January 25, 2012, at 10:00 AM, but will close between 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM for staff training. It will re-open at 4:00 PM and remain open until the regular closing time of 8:00 PM. Sorry for any inconvenience to patrons and visitors, but additional training is needed for the switchover to the new Evergreen System.

OPENING LATE TUESDAY 01/24/12

The Green Free Library will open at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 24, 2012. This delay in opening will allow staff to begin training on the new online system that the library will be switching to in mid-February of this year. The new system, known as Evergreen, will mean big changes for staff and patrons of the library, but is an important first step in what may eventually be a state-wide library card for the Pennsylvania Library system. Check back for updates in new policies and procedures for checking out library materials and how to use the new system.

The Green Free Library is located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro, PA. Special events for the week are as follows:

MONDAY

There are no special events scheduled for today, but the weather forecast is for freezing rain. Please check here, listen to one of the local radio stations, or call the library at 570-724-4876 during inclimate weather to verify hours of operation before you venture out. If the Wellsboro Area School District is operating on a 2 hour delay, the library will open aat 11:00 AM instead of the normal opening time of 10:00 AM. If the school district closes for the day, the library staff will try to open at 12:00 PM, if possible. Again, please check the sources or call the library if the weather is bad. If the library is closed, all fines (including movies) will be waived.

TUESDAY

The library will not open today until 2:00 PM. Staff are beginning training on the new Evergreen System that will be operational in mid-February. The library will remain open until 8:00 PM.

WEDNESDAY

Hold on to your hats! Storytime will begin at 10:15 AM in the Children's Room of the library. The theme is...HATS.

Adult knitting will meet in the main room of the library at 3:00 PM. All knitters of any skill level 17 years and older are invited to come and unravel the mysteries of knitting.

THURSDAY

Kids knitting for school-age kids will begin at 3:30 PM, upstairs in the library. Bring an ongoing project, or learn how-to knit for the first time. Supplies are availale to anyone that wants to give knitting a try.

Brr! It's cold outside, but what better place to come in out of the cold then The Green Free Libray? Check-out a book, or one of the fun activities planned for this week.

TUESDAY

The book club will meet at 6:30 PM in the main room of the library. The book that will be discussed this month is Hush by Kate White. We will also be picking the next title for the E-reader book club meeting that will be held on February 21, 2012.

WEDNESDAY

Story Time will be held Wednesday morning at 10:15 AM. The very appropriate theme for this week is WINTER!

Adult knitting will meet in the main room of the library at 3:00 PM. What better time to knit a new scarf, or some toasty-warm socks? Knitters of all levels are welcome to attend. The session usualyy lasts about an hour or so.

THURSDAY

Kids knitting will be held at 3:30 PM, upstairs in the library. Any child of school age is invited to attend, and beginners are encouraged to come see what the point is! Supplies are available to new knitters who are interested in trying before buying.

Here are the Story Time themes for the Spring 2012 session at The Green Free Library. Story Time is held Wednesday morning from 10:15 AM -11:00 AM. Sessions are held in the Children's Room and are free and open to all children from birth to age 5 along with at least one adult caregiver. Please be considerate and arrive before the program starts so as not to disrupt the other participants.

Start the year 2012 with a visit to The Green Free Library. Attend one of this week’s events, or check out all the books, magazines, music and movies available for circulation to card holders. The library still has a sizable collection of VHS tapes for those who still have a working VCR.

WEDNESDAY Story Time will be held from 10:15 AM-11:00 AM in the Childrens Room of the library. This week’s theme will be Snowmen and that’s snow foolin’!

Kids Knitting is back in session. It will begin at 3:30 PM, upstairs in the library. School age children of any knitting level are welcome to attend free of charge. Materials are available for beginning knitters who would like to try out the craft. The session lasts about an hour.

THURSDAY

Adult Knitting will begin at 3:00 PM in the main room of the library. Knitters of all levels are encouraged to attend. Feel free to get some help with a tricky stitch, or bring a pattern to share. The session lasts from an hour to an hour and a half.

There are no special activities scheduled this week at The Green Free Library. There is still plenty of time to stop in and check-out a book, movie or music CD to help put you in the Christmas mood, or to get Christmas off your mind if you need a break!

The library will be open Monday-Thursday this week, from 10:00 AM-8:00 PM. It will be closed on Friday & Saturday of this week, and Monday the 26 as well. The book drop will be open for books, but please do not put audios or movies in the book drop. These items must be returned while the library is open. Date Dues have been adjusted for holiday closings, please checdk your item. If you need to renew a book or audio (sorry, no renewals on magazines or movies), please call the library and leave a message on the machine at 570-724-4876 or renew online through your My Millennium account. IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS!

What better way to get into the Christmas Spirit then to make a stop at The Green Free Library.

Here are just a few of the signs of the holiday.

Newest staff member, Margo Sclichter shares her wonderful Santa collection with visitors and patrons during the month of December.

The Library Giving Tree is setup in hopes some Library Angels will donate coveted items that just weren't in the overstretched budget. If you are looking for an unusual gift to give someone on your list, stop in and grab an ornament off the tree. You may either purchase the book or DVD from your favorite retailer, or give cash or a check made out to The Green Free Library for the purchase amount written on the ornament. The library will include a special bookplate with the name of the person you are gifting in honor of, or the donor if you just want to help out the library. Remember, all donations (items or $) are tax deductible, as the library is a non-profit organization.

The Friends of The Green Free Library hosted the annual Dickens of a Christmas open house at the library. Good food, good fun and good music were free to all who attended.

And last, but certainly not least, Santa Claus did come to Town, or rather to The Green Free Story Time!

Christmas is coming, don't get caught up in the rush! Take a break and stop by The Green Free Library for a book, some music, or a movie, or to join in one of the fun activities this week.

TUESDAY

The E-Reader book club will meet on Tuesday night at 6:30 PM in the main room of the library. This month, the discussion will be on The Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Participants are invited to bring a holiday snack if they wish to share with the group. Anyone may attend, s long as they have read the work to be discussed.

WEDNESDAY

Story Time will be held in the Childrens Room at 10:15 AM. This week the theme will be Winter Holidays. Bring a camera as a special guest will be making an appearance.

Adult knitting will be held at 3:00 PM in the main room of the library. Knitters of all experience levels are invited to attend.

READING AND BOOK SIGNING

November is coming to an end and Christmas will soon be here. If you are looking for a new Christmas cookie recipe, or a pattern for a cute Christmas craft to give someone on your list, The Green Free Library has lots of great books to help you out! Not into cooking or crafting, check out the many fictional titles of books and movies to help you get some Christmas spirit. Special displays have been set up in the Robinson Room, Childrens Room and the Main Room for you to browse and borrow.

MONDAY

The library will open at its regular time of 10:00 AM, after being closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Wednesday

Story Time will begin at 10:15 AM in the Childrens Room. This week, the theme will be Community Helpers. Children from birth through 5 years of age and their parent or caretaker, are invited to come and here stories about special people in their neighborhood who do special jobs.

Adult knitters will meet in the main room of the library at 3:00 PM. Knitters of levels of experience are welcome to come, for help on a special project, or an ongoing basis.

THURSDAY

The First Thursday's Writing Group will meet upstairs in the library from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Please bring up to three pages of your original work, of any genre, to share with the group in a round-table format. Copies may be made before the meeting and are available for free to group members thanks to The Friends of The Green Free Library.

The Kids knitting group will resume in January.

Please do not e-mail, as that goes to the director and she will not be in during the holidays. Please remember that DVDs/VHS tapes and magazines may can't be renewed, nor can Audio or visual material be left in the book drop.

Rumors are circulating...Yes it is true, The Friends of The Green Free Library has "defriended" us as far as the booksale is concerned. Lack of volunteers to help with the tedious and heavy work, as well as damp storage and work space has forced the decision that there will be no Friends of The Green Free Library Annual Booksale in 2012!

But...NEVER FEAR! Library staff and the director are working on something exciting for the new year to help raise money for the library and give you a place to recycle your old books as well as a place to find new (old) books. Look for an announcement soon, and don't stop bringing in donations pf gently used books, DVDs, and CDs. Sorry, we still don't take magazines, records, or text books.

Don't forget also that all money and items donated to the library are tax deductible.

E-READER WORKSHOP

The E-Reader workshop was well attended with 37 patrons and guests of The Green Free Library coming in to learn about the different types of E-Readers and how to use the Listen to Books Website to download E-books and Audio books to their devices.

Speaking Stones is a poem written by Wellsboro's own, David Bliss(WW II Vet), especially for the WW II Dedication.

The "Tree of Life" is an original work designed and created by sculptor Gareth Curtiss of Olympia, WA. A replacement for Wellsboro's long lost "World War II Honor Roll, the project was organized by the joint efforts of Betty Coolidge Frazier and Joan Spencer Hart in the late 90's. With the assistance and support of friends, family and townsfolk of the WWII vets the memorial was dedicated on November 10, 2002, and stands today to remind us of their service, "Lest We Forget".

Please return your donation to The Green Free Library at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro, PA 16901. Suggested amounts are on the letter, but donations of any amount are accepted and appreciated. (And TAX-DEDUCTIBLE!!)You don't have to be a member to donate and recieve the deduction, just include 2011-2012 in the memo area of your check or money order and provide a name and mailing adress for your receipt. Families are invited to Story Time at The Green Free Library! It's Wednesday morning at 10:15 AM. This week's theme is...FAMILY! A family can be made up of many different types of people. All children from birth to age 5 years are invited to attend with a parent or caregiver in the children's room for stories, songs and crafts.

Adult knitters will meet in the main room of the library at 3:30 PM. All levels are welcome!

Kids knitting will be in the afternoon. Join us after school at 3:30 PM, upstairs in the library. Don't know how to knit? No problem! Instructions and supplies will be provided by some very talented individuals. Plan to stay about an hour and have alot of fun.

TUESDAY

Do you like listening to books? Has someone given you an E-reader (Kindle, Kobo or other brand), and you’re not sure how to use it? Want to find out how to borrow free e-books from the library? There will be a special E-Reader Workshop on Tuesday Nov 1, 2011 at 5:30 PM in the main room of the library. Bring your E-Reader, or take a look at ours.

Today is the first day of NaNoWriMo. Not sure what this is? If you like to write, check Thursday’s events for more information

WEDNESDAY

Story Time will be held in the Children’s Room at the library. It begins at 10:15 AM and the theme this week will be Scarecrows and Harvest!

Adult knitting will be held in the main room of the library at 3:00 PM. Plan to stay at least an hour, or feel free to tie things up early. All levels are welcome. Help and instruction is available.

THURSDAY

Kids knitting will be held upstairs in the library after school at 3:30 PM. New knitters are encouraged to attend. Don’t have any needles? No problem! Beginner supplies are available free of charge.

First Thursday Writers Group will meet upstairs in the library from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Writers of all genres are welcome, but must be at least 17 years old to attend do to possible adult subject matter. Members are encouraged to bring up to 3 pages of their work to share, copies can be made free of charge at the library before the meeting. This is the perfect time to join the group now and get started on your novel since the 2011 session of NaNoWroMo just got under way on November 1. NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and it is a great way to see if you have the Write Stuff! Check out the website for more info and to sign up and track your progress. It’s free and you never know!

BEAUTIFUL PAINTED CHINA ON DISPLAY

After the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, China painting became the pasttime of thousands of women throughout the country.

White China blanks were purchased, paints were applied, and the pieces were fired in small gas fired kilns.

The partial and completed pieces on display at The Green Free Library through the end of November were painted by three women from Knoxville between 1916 and 1930. Stop in soon and see these beautiful works of art. Maybe your relative painted some, or you are lucky enough to own a piece of your own.

Here's what's happening at The Green Free Library during the week of Monday October 24, 2011 through Saturday October 29, 2011

MONDAY

Business as usual. The library is open from 10:00 AM-8:00 PM. Staff are busy catching up on routine work that was put on hold while the annual appeal was being sent out. Once again the library needs your support to offset cuts from the state budget. It takes a lot of money to provide books, magazines, newspapers, audio & visual materials and Internet access to the town of Wellsboro and surrounding communities. Expenses also include heat, electricity and water, not to mention garbage pick-up! Any amount is appreciated. If you didn't get your official letter from the library, please feel free to send a check to The Green Free Library. The mailing address is 134 Main Street Wellsboro, PA 16901, or drop it off at the desk. Receipts will be provided and all donations are tax deductible.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday morning at 10:15 AM the library will be full of ghosts. ghoules and little goblins. No, the library doesn't need an excorcism, it's Story Time and the theme for the week is HALLOWEEN!No tricks, but lots of treats. Come in costume for a spooctacular time. All children from birth to age 5 years are invited to parade on down with a parant or caregiverin stories, songs and crafts.

Adult knitting will be held in the main room of the library. All levels are welcome. Don't know how to knit? Don't tie yourself up in knots about it, just stop in and someone in the group will be glad to get you started.

THURSDAY

Kids knitting will be held upstairs in the library beginning at 3:30 PM. Instructions and beginning neddles are provided for those new to the art.

SATURDAY

There will be a special Family Story Time on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the library. Author Anita Sutherland Millmann will read her story Checky the Feral Cat, and bring a special guest to visit. Sorry, no dogs allowed!

It's going to be a quiet week at The Green Free Library. The perfect time to stop in for a good book. Staff members are busy getting the shelves in shape for the new school year. WASD resumes classes on August 31, 2011.

Miss Chandra will be facilitating the 2011-2012 Pre-school story hour, check back for scheduled themes. Story hour will be held Wednesdays beginning at 10:15 AM, and will begin in mid-September. There will be one combines session for all children under the age of five, including stories, songs, crafts and holiday treats. All children are welcome, and parents are encouraged to sign-up for a library card. Library cards are also available for children of any age as long as a parent or legal guardian is present, and has proper identification.

Adult knitting will be held as usual in the main room of the library on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 PM.

The Green Free Library book club will meet for a special session to discuss The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. While the group usually meets every other month to discuss a "hardcopy" version of a novel or non-fiction book, it will now meet in the off month to discuss a work that is considered a "classic", and that is available to download onto an e-reader, or computer screen at Listen to Books, or on the Internet.

There will be no story hour this week, as staff recovers from an exciting finally of the Summer Reading Program. Check back for the new schedule.

The Green Free Library offers free public Internet access to all cardholders. A limited number of guest passes are available for those who are visiting the area for a short time.

If you live in Tioga County and plan to use the Internet more then once or twice, you will need to get a library card. This requires a valid PA DL/state ID, or a civilian ID from the Sheriff's office. If you do not have a PA ID and you live in the area, or are visiting for more than 2 weeks, you may obtain an Internet-Only card for $5 (Valid Photo ID still required). This enables you to use the Internet sign-in station for two periods of 45 minutes a day, but does not let you check out library materials.

Stop in and visit The Green Free Library. The library is located at 134 Main Street.

Hours of operation are Monday thru Thursday from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM and Friday & Saturday 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. (The library will be closed July 2-4).

Cards are available to anyone with a current PA drivers license/state issued ID, current Military ID,or a Civilian ID from the Tioga County Courthouse. Residents that own property in Tioga County but do not have a PA DL must bring a tax notice or deed. Others without the required identification may put down a refundable $25 deposit; photo ID still required.

You must have a library card (with no fines) to use the Internet. A guest card will be provided to non-residents in the area for up to two weeks. Anyone requiring Internet acess for longer than two weeks must get a library card, or purchase an Internet Access Only card for $5. Identification will still be required, and you must be over 17. Free Wi-Fi is available sans printing capabilities. A Keycode is available at the Circulation desk.

MEMORIAL DVDS ADDED

They are available to checkout by any adult cardholder for a period of one week. The Summer Reading Program starts Wednesday June 22, 2011 at The Green Free Library! The theme for this year’s event is “One World, Many Stories”. If you haven’t registered yet there is still time. Come to the library, or click here. Please, no phone registrations. Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-reg is appreciated to make sure enough supplies are available. All events take place on Wednesdays at 10:15 AM. Please come a few minutes early to sign-in and so as not to interrupt the presenters during their program. Kids in grades K-6 will meet at the Gmeiner (behind the library), while Preschoolers meet in the main room of the library.

Ready to Travel with AAA-Learn how to prepare for a trip. Bring in a photograph of yourself to make your summer reading passport! (K-6)
As always (once the program starts) there is also a chance to earn prizes by reading and recording the books and minutes that you read. Logs may be kept online, once you have completed your minutes, print out your certificate and bring it to the library to receive your reward. Or, pick up a reading log at the library and bring it back when it is complete. All participants are also entered for a chance to win one of the grand prizes donated by local businesses and merchants.

Today, June 19, 2011, is Father’s Day! This is the day children of all ages honor their fathers or other nurturing men in their lives, thanks to the efforts of one woman. Sonora Smart Dodd spent over 62 years fighting to establish a holiday for all fathers after creating the celebration in honor of her own father, William Jackson Smart. Though this is not the first indication that fathers were honored by their children, Sonora’s dedication and perseverance led to the establishment of a recognized national holiday on the 3rd Sunday in June. The first official Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Father’s Day is also celebrated on other days throughout the world.

The director and staff of The Green Free Library would like to wish all fathers and fathers-to-be, a Happy Father's Day!!

The staff of The Green Free Library would like to wish all patrons, visitors and staff a safe and “Happy Memorial Day”, But more importantly we would like to honor all of the brave men and woman who have given their lives fighting for our country and our freedom. They have certainly taught us that freedom is not free. We would also like to thank all currently serving in the armed forces as well as Veterans who have previously served.

As you are enjoying this beautiful day with your family and friends, please take a moment and remember the true meaning of the day. To many of us it signifies the beginning of summer and is celebrated with fun, food and festivities. It is only upon the blood, sweat and tears of the soldiers that fought and died for us that we have the opportunity to partake in meaningless frivolities on a day original seeped in sorrow.

Memorial Day was established as a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. It was originally named Decoration Day. Like many holidays, its exact origin is somewhat unclear. As many as two dozen cities lay claim to the honor of being the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Waterloo, NY, and Pennsylania’s own Boalsburg.

Also like many U.S. holidays, the day of observance has been changed several times. The traditional day is May 30, but we observe the day on the last Monday of the month. Where the day was established, and when it is observed is not as important as why and how.

The Green Free Library will be closed Saturday May 28, 2011-Monday May 30, 2011. It will re-open at the regular time of 10:00 AM on Tuesday. If you need to renew a book, please call 570-724-4876 and leave a message on the answering machine with the title and the name of the cardholder. Remember books may only be renewed onetime, DVDs, VHS, and magazines may not be renewed. The book drop on the porch is open for books returns only. Movies and audio-books in any format may not be left in the book drop for any reason. A fine of $5 per item will be accessed on any such item left either in, or on the book drop.

Come to The Green Free Library on Tuesday May 24 and hear Mark Twain talk about his life and times. The program starts at 6:30 PM, Please don't be late!

WEDNESDAY

There will be no regular Story Hour until the fall. Check back for updates on the Summer Reading program.

Knitting Club for adults of any level, including beginners, begins at 3:00 PM. This group will continue meeting! The kids groupwill not meet again until fall.
